Scale-up Profile

Dr Olivia Cavlan, MD Head of Business and Operations, Alchemab

“Business operations and also some of the strategic elements around fundraising is really what I enjoy. How to bring together the external environment and tell the story of what you are doing in compelling way so that it achieves what you need it to – is quite a difficult task! And I think that some of the experience required to do it well is quite hard to come by- so I’d be delighted to talk to and help people shape how they can start thinking about this.”

Olivia has enjoyed a varied career in life sciences spanning the past 20 years. She qualified as a medical doctor before switching into life sciences with GSK. From there, she spent ten years at McKinsey in various roles working with big pharma companies on many different topics - from drug and target discovery through to clinical operations and commercial activities. Then, as a partner at Quantum Black she focused on analytics and advanced analytics in pharmaceuticals, before moving into venture capital - spending a couple of years with SV Health Investors helping investors analyse deals and build companies. Olivia is really motivated by the scientific capabilities and tools that we have today combined with the data and analytics. She is excited by being part of the next generation of drug discovery with Alchemab and being at the cutting edge of the next innovation for patients that is going to be transformative.

Start-up Profile

Jolyon Martin, Head of Business Development, PetMedix

Having previously worked with Simprints and Horizon Discovery prior to his founding position at PetMedix, Jolyon offers the following advice to fellow entrepreneurs: “Always keep in mind why you are doing what you are doing. There are always challenging times when starting a new company, but if you keep focused on the 'why' it can get you through and also help prevent drift. Secondly, ask for advice! You’d be surprised how happy people are to give valuable advice if you ask with genuine interest.”

Working at the interface between the technical and commercial worlds, with people looking to realise a common goal and build something special, is what drives Jolyon. He believes in the ability of scientific and technical research to bring about significant impact and change, and greatly enjoys seeing that through to fruition.

Investment Opportunities

Babraham Research Campus works hard to facilitate and develop investor engagement, through specific events such as the Babraham Investor Conference, as well as forging strong and long-lasting links with other networks like Cambridge Enterprise, Innovate UK and One Nucleus. These activities along with the strength of the Campus network attract high quality investment into the companies on Campus (over £1.2bn to date) and into the Campus itself. Evidence shows that being located on Campus accelerates the rate at which, and amount of investment, that companies located here are able to raise.

Investment Successes

With over 60 commercial science organisations on site, the Campus is an exciting, dynamic and collaborative ecosystem of talented people dedicated to making a difference to the health of the population. Part of that work involves raising investment to sustain these ground-breaking activities. Find out more about some of the latest successes below.
