How to use social media to make your next event really memorable


We’ve all attended lots of events – training courses, team meetings, conferences – but some will stand out in your mind more than others. Nicki Kinsey, Director of Business Operations at the Babraham Research Campus shares her thoughts. 

In this post, I’ll share some of the most effective and creative ideas I’ve picked up to help you give your delegates those feelings of positive anticipation and engagement at your next event.

Some of the most memorable events I’ve attended have had me hooked from the start - the ones where I feel I’m engaged and contributing to the event before it’s even begun, throughout the day and long after it’s finished. I have left these meetings feeling valued, energised and part of a wider community of like-minded people.

The key link between all of these unforgettable gatherings? The event’s use of social media.

Read on for some top tips (and you don’t need to be a social media expert to put these simple and creative ideas into practice!).

Being social-able
One of the most crucial engagement channels for event planners in this digital age is social media.

It provides a platform for attendees to become actively engaged in an event and gives you real-time insights and opportunities.

Not only can social media help you “sell” the event, it will also cultivate discussion and goodwill, reach a wider audience and sustain the “buzz” after the face to face experience ends. Here are a few ways to leverage this:

Before the event:

  1. Create a short, unique and easy-to-remember event hashtag – use this on ALL online and offline (printed materials) channels.
  2. Create an event page on Facebook to help target and build your audience or a Showcase page or Group on LinkedIn to enable you to post regular updates about your event.
  3. Trail the event using a short, branded video and other content teasers.

During the event:

  1. Consider having a live display screen showcasing all the social posts which use your hashtag in real-time.
  2. Capture key speaker points and post quotes as they happen; even better - live stream speakers (with their permission of course).
  3. Interact and thank users who contribute - remember to use your event hashtag on every social post.

After the event:

  1. Upload and share videos and photos of the event.
  2. Make the presentations available to attendees using a measurable, clickable link.
  3. Maintain your newly-engaged community by asking for feedback or ideas for future events and sharing relevant articles and tips.
