StartUP@Babraham is a competition that supports ideas and/or companies that are pre-seed to seed stage (below £500k investment). Annually, via a rigorous and competitive application and selection process, up to five early stage life sciences enterprises are selected to take part in a 5-month bio-entrepreneurial programme. In addition, the ventures also receive £10k non-diluted funding and access to shared free lab and office space. Participation on the programme enhances the opportunity to gain investment via proactive exposure to investors and pharma partners. Our aim is to help create new jobs, technology and therapies and to maximise the impact of the Cambridge Life Science Cluster.
Our first StartUP@Babraham cohort, which participated in the programme in 2018, were Antiverse, Kalium Health, Oppilotech, Qkine, SNPr and VisusNano. We continue to support these companies as they further develop their businesses. The second cohort of life sciences start-ups – CC Bio, Microfluidx, Reflection Therapeutics, Shift Bioscience and TropoFour Therapeutics started in September 2019 and will complete the program in 2020.
StartUP@Babraham participants come from a variety of sources; serial entrepreneurs, the local scientific and academic community, spin-offs from larger companies, entrepreneurial competitions and also having been scouted by the Accelerate@Babraham team, sponsors and supporters.
Established companies on the Babraham Research Campus (and within the wider ecosystem) provide mentors and advisors to these start-ups. Start-up ventures are assisted by both business and scientific mentors. The larger organisations on Campus, including the Babraham Institute, value their supporting role helping them to link and engage with emerging companies and helping to develop up and coming talent.
